Tampa, FL based Club Joins Florida Central Division for 2020 Fall Season

August 29, 2020 – Los Angeles, CA – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is pleased to announce Sporting Tampa Bay FC as its newest Division I member.

Based in Tampa, FL, Sporting Tampa Bay FC will begin UPSL play in the 2020 Fall Season as part of the Florida Central Division. The club will play its UPSL home games at Wesley Chapel District Park (7727 Boyette Road, Wesley Chapel, FL 33545) in compliance with UPSL National Division I standards.

UPSL Vice President Christian Vallejos said, “As we continue to expand into West Florida we are excited to welcome Sporting Tampa Bay FC. We expect the club to be a competitive member of the Florida Central Division from the start but the race for the playoffs is fierce. That division has proven to be the most competitive in amateur soccer in 2020. We wish Sporting Tampa Bay FC the best of luck in the season ahead.”

Sporting Tampa Bay FC was created in 2004 by the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association and is operated by its board of directors. Jim Hubbard currently serves as the club’s chair of competitive soccer.

“2020 has been a major year for us. We made a major change to the direction of our club, rebranding from Wesley Chapel Soccer Club after 16 years to become Sporting Tampa Bay FC in order to make a serious impact on the game and youth sports here in the Tampa area,” Hubbard said. “We are redefining and transforming our approach to player development and training. Our identity is our commitment to our players’ progression. We want to change the perception and culture in the Tampa soccer community.”

Stuart Campbell is the club’s Director of Coaching. A former professional player with Leicester City, Birmingham City and Bristol Rovers in England, Campbell made more than 510 professional appearances and had 14 caps for Scotland’s Under-21s at the international level. The former head coach of Tampa Bay Rowdies (USL), Campbell holds both a USSF ‘A’ Pro and UEFA ‘A’ coaching licenses.

“We chose to join the UPSL as it was the best league to fit within our clubs’ direction of being recognized as Tampa’s premier club for player development,” Campbell said. “Joining the UPSL provides motivation for younger players within the club to look forward to one day playing at a higher level. The team gives opportunities to talented young players in the Tampa area who are looking to play competitively and at a higher level.”
